How Your Kidneys Actually Detox Your Body

Your kidneys filter around 200 litres of fluid a day. Here is how that works, why 'kidney cleanses' miss the point, and what genuinely protects them.

Alongside the liver, your kidneys are the body’s built-in filtration system — and the numbers are the fastest way to see why no “cleanse” improves on them.

What your kidneys actually do

They filter roughly 200 litres of fluid a day. Your entire blood volume is about five litres, so that is your whole circulation passing through, over and over, being sorted.

The rate has a name and a number: the glomerular filtration rate, normally around 120–125 ml every minute. It is the single most useful measure of kidney function, and it is what a doctor is estimating when they check your kidneys with a blood test.

What comes out of that process is not simply “waste removed”. The kidneys excrete metabolic waste products and excess ions while keeping the substances you need in the blood — glucose, amino acids, most of the sodium and water. Filtering is the easy half. Deciding what to keep is the clever half, and it happens 125 millilitres at a time, continuously.

Why “kidney cleanses” miss the point

Products marketed to flush the kidneys usually rely on diuretic herbs. Diuretics increase the volume of urine you pass. That is a real effect, and it is not the same thing as filtering better.

In a healthy person, filtration is not the bottleneck. Your kidneys are not backed up waiting for help; they are keeping pace with everything you have eaten and drunk this week. Making yourself urinate more does not raise a normal GFR — it mostly moves water around, and the scales register the loss for a day.

There is also a floor beneath this: if your kidneys were genuinely impaired, a tea would not be the intervention. Reduced kidney function is monitored with blood tests and managed by treating its causes, and a product that could meaningfully change how a nephron works would be a drug with a licence.

What genuinely supports kidney health

  • Stay adequately hydrated — enough that you are not thirsty and your urine is pale. There is no prize for more.
  • Keep blood pressure and blood sugar in healthy ranges. Diabetes and hypertension are the two biggest drivers of chronic kidney disease, and both damage kidneys silently.
  • Go easy on excess salt, which pushes blood pressure the wrong way.
  • Be careful with regular high-dose painkillers. Long-term heavy NSAID use is hard on kidneys, and it is the everyday habit most people never connect to them.

When to get checked

Diabetes, high blood pressure, and a family history of kidney disease are all reasons to have kidney function checked periodically. So is long-term use of medication that the kidneys clear.

This is the genuinely useful version of “monitoring your kidneys”, and it is a blood test rather than a product: chronic kidney disease is famous for having almost no symptoms until a great deal of function is already gone. A cleanse offers you the feeling of having done something. A test tells you whether anything needs doing.

The bottom line

Your kidneys sorted 200 litres today. They will do it again tomorrow, without instruction. Support them with blood pressure, blood sugar, sensible hydration and a light hand with painkillers — and skip the flush.
